Get ready for an exciting season as the UConn women's basketball team showcases their reigning championship prowess!
In an exhibition game against Boston College, the Huskies demonstrated their potential for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Leading the charge was star guard Azzi Fudd, who ignited the team's momentum with a scorching hot hand. Fudd's 3-pointers from the corner set the tone, and her 15 points in the third quarter alone were a sight to behold.
But here's where it gets controversial: is this team even better than their championship-winning squad? With Fudd and fellow superstar Sarah Strong leading the way, the Huskies routed Boston College 84-67, leaving fans in awe.
Coach Geno Auriemma praised the duo's game sense and confidence, saying, "They can blow a game open." And it's not just their offense that shines; the Huskies' post players, including Strong and transfer Serah Williams, dominated the boards and showcased their defensive prowess.
Williams, a senior center, looked right at home, especially compared to her performance during the open practice. Her comfort level and connection with Strong are evident, and Auriemma believes she'll be a huge asset to the team.
However, the Huskies' defense needs some work, particularly around the 3-point line, where Boston College found open looks.
And this is the part most people miss: the bench. While UConn went deep with their substitutions, the forwards off the bench struggled to fill the void when Strong and Williams were off the court. Redshirt senior Ice Brady, redshirt sophomore Jana El Alfy, and freshman Blanca Quinonez combined for a modest eight points.
UConn's young guards, including USC transfer Kayleigh Heckel and freshman Kelis Fisher, showed some nerves, committing turnovers and fouls. Quinonez, despite her impressive assists and steals, also had her fair share of mistakes.
So, will the Huskies' bench production improve? Can they tighten up their defense? These are the questions on everyone's minds as the season approaches.
What do you think? Will UConn's women's basketball team defend their title with ease, or will they face some challenges along the way? Let's discuss in the comments!
