The 20 best Premier League goalkeepers right now have been ranked - in order (2025)

Summary

  • Liverpool's Alisson has been named as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.
  • Last season's golden glove winner David Raya is the runner-up.
  • Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels is climbing the list after a stellar start to the season.

The Premier League has always been notorious for great men between the sticks. The likes of Peter Schmeichel, Petr Cech, Edwin van der Sar, David Seaman and Jens Lehmann all come to mind when thinking of the all-time greats. However, in the 2024/25 Premier League season, fans are truly blessed with some of the finest array of goalkeeping talent the league has ever seen. We've seen the position evolve so much - from standard saves on the goal line to 'keepers now commanding their area with expertise and even starting attacks with exquisite passing.

Many of the number ones at different Premier League clubs are looking to avoid the dreaded 'second season syndrome' this term, while the likes of Aaron Ramsdale and Kepa Arrizabalaga will be looking to settle into life at their new teams. With so much talent to pick from in the ever-changing landscape that is the goalkeeper decision, the top 20 Premier League shot-stoppers currently playing today have been ranked.

Ranking factors

The factors taken into consideration are as follows:

  • Clean sheets - how many clean sheets they've earned at the club is a strong indicator of their quality. But it's important to remember some teams have stronger defences than others.
  • Importance to their club - if they are consistently making world-class saves and helping their team every minute, they will be ranked highly, even if they're not at the best clubs.
  • Distribution - as part of modern-day football, goalkeepers must be capable of starting attacks with precision passing into the danger zones.
  • Shot-stopping - as the bread and butter of being a goalkeeper, they must be capable of making world-class saves on a regular basis, especially in the hardest league in the world.

Kick-starting proceedings in 20th place is Wolverhampton Wanderers' Sam Johnstone, who has endured a tricky start to life at Molineux. Residing at rock bottom of the Premier League, Gary O’Neil has been unable to rely on his shot stopper to keep them in games.

Similar can be said for Arijanet Muric and Alphonse Areola of Ipswich Town and West Ham United, respectively. The pair have struggled to pull up trees since the campaign got underway and their respective sides are in trouble as a result.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, who remains the most expensive goalkeeper purchase in football history, struggled to set Stamford Bridge alight and, after a failed stint at Real Madrid, now plies his trade for Bournemouth. He’s ranked at 17th.

Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez has regained his spot in between the sticks in west London but is still ranked 16th with many fans wanting to see the Blues move on and find someone else. Mads Hermansen, despite playing for relegation-threatened Leicester City, has impressed between the sticks for the Foxes and is 15th.

Aaron Ramsdale and Bart Verbruggen are ranked in 14h and 13th, respectively, with the former looking to improve his form at Southampton. The latter, however, is having a solid campaign with Brighton & Hove Albion. Dean Henderson and Bernd Leno round out the bottom half of the list, sitting 12th and 11th respectively.

10 Mark Flekken

Brentford

The 20 best Premier League goalkeepers right now have been ranked - in order (1)

Despite losing multiple top stars over the years such as Ivan Toney, Thomas Frank's Brentford continue to find ways to operate above their station and are doing so again this season. While a lot of the credit rightly goes to the manager, some must also be directed at Mark Flekken in between the sticks.

The keeper has done an excellent job replacing David Raya for the Bees and is actually the highest rated goalkeeper in the Premier League this season in terms of his WhoScored rating. There's no doubt the club would be much worse off right now if they didn't have Flekken in goal.

9 Jordan Pickford

Everton

The start of the 2024/25 season has seen a drastic change of fortunes for Jordan Pickford. Without it, he may have fallen even higher on this list. The England number one had his best club season to date last term, finishing as the runner-up in the Golden Glove race. Given the fact that Everton were battling relegation, this was some achievement.

Another summer where he came agonzingly close to international glory later, Pickford returned to Goodison Park and now potentially finds himself in the midst of another relegation dogfight with a -10 goal difference. Things would be much worse for the Toffees if it wasn't for Pickford, though. Despite being 16th, Everton have conceded just 25 times this season.

8 Guglielmo Vicario

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur replaced long-term player Hugo Lloris in the summer of 2023 after the Frenchman repeatedly made mistakes in the prior campaign. He eventually joined LA FC in America, after being replaced by Guglielmo Vicario. Signed from Empoli, very few fans had heard of him, but - ever since his debut away to Brentford in August - he has impressed.

During his strong start to life in the Premier League, he has shown a combination of solid shot-stopping abilities, as well as being adept at playing the role of sweeper-keeper. Off the back of seven clean sheets in his first season in North London, the Italian will be hoping the rest of his defenders can help him out in order to keep even more this time around.

7 Matz Sels

Nottingham Forest

The 20 best Premier League goalkeepers right now have been ranked - in order (2)

Nottingham Forest have blown everyone away this season in terms of exceeding their expectations. After a couple of campaigns narrowly avoiding relegation, they've turned their aspirations on their head and are flying high at the top end of the table heading into the second half of the season. They've got the second best defensive record in the league and a large portion of that is down to how good Matz Sels has been for them.

The keeper has been a revelation following his move to the midlands and is regularly playing the hero with some sublime saves to keep his side in games. His stock has risen massively over the last 12 months and if he keeps his excellent form up, he might even climb higher up this list.

6 Nick Pope

Newcastle United

Nick Pope may be behind Pickford in the England pecking order, but based on current form, he's the best this country has available right now. Newcastle United opted to buy the former Burnley man in the 2022 summer transfer window, with the English giant filling the void superbly and becoming an instant fan favourite.

In his 37 league games for the Magpies during his debut campaign, the 31-year-old kept an impressive 14 clean sheets, helping his team finish with the joint-best defence in the league. He was a big reason why Newcastle were able to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2003.

Injuries meant that the Englishman missed a large chunk of the following term, but he returned to top form at the start of this campaign. While he isn't the best with his distribution, Pope's steadiness and reliability will be crucial in the Geordies' hopes of a return to Europe this season.

5 Andre Onana

Manchester United

When Manchester United signed Andre Onana in the summer of 2023, it was expected that he would be one of the best goalkeepers in the league. However, he endured a shaky start to life at Old Trafford, particularly in the Champions League. He joined off the back of an incredible year with Inter Milan, and while he wasn't helped by the sheer number of shots on his goal, he made too many mistakes to be relied upon.

As he has entered his second season in English football, the Cameroonian proved himself to be one of a few that Ruben Amorim can now rely on every week. Time will tell whether that will continue, though.

4 Ederson

Manchester City

Despite being labelled as the Premier League's best goalkeeper by Peter Schmeichel, Ederson sits in fourth. The Citizens struggled in the early Pep Guardiola era, partly because they were missing a suitable shot-stopper. Their manager's style of play required a keeper who couldn't just save shots, but spray passes, start attacks and provide assists. As soon as the Brazilian arrived, they improved.

In the 2023/2024 Premier League season, he continued to show consistency between the sticks. With 10 clean sheets and 57 saves - very few due to Man City's strong defence - he helped the club retain their Premier League crown for a fourth successive year. Rumours of a potential departure did not come to fruition, and there did seem to be some friction between the number 31 and his manager.

He was even dropped in favour of Stefan Ortega amidst City's struggles this season. Regardless, the former Benfica man remains not only one of the best goalkeepers in the league, but also in the entire world.

3 Emiliano Martinez

Aston Villa

Emiliano Martinez played a key role in Argentina winning the World Cup in December 2022, particularly in the penalty shoot-out. This wasn't just a one-off feat though, as he has done so in every tournament he has been a part of internationally, including the 2024 iteration of the Copa America.

On the club front, Martinez moved to Aston Villa in the summer of 2020 to revitalise his career - and he did exactly that, with consistent performances making him one of the best in the league. The Argentine won the Yashin award for best goalkeeper in 2023 and 2024, and with his international displays and his efforts to propel Villa to the heights they've reached, he remains one of the best keepers around.

2 David Raya

Arsenal

Former Brentford number one David Raya has established himself as one of the league’s best during his time in the top flight with him calmness being the sticks, perhaps helped by having William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes stationed in front of him, is an aspect of his game that shouldn't go under the radar. Having come up with the Bees in 2021, it was only a matter of time before one of the league's big boys came calling, and that they most certainly did.

The Spaniard joined Arsenal on an initial loan last season and became a crucial part of one of the most formidable defences in Europe. He ended up with the Golden Glove after managing 16 clean sheets and has kept seven in 20 outings this time around.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: David Raya became just the third Spaniard after Pepe Reina and David de Gea to win the Premier League Golden Glove award.

1 Alisson Becker

Liverpool

Last, but by no means least, Brazilian international and Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has been ranked as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. After losing the 2018 Champions League final, Jurgen Klopp signed him to take the club to the next step - and he did exactly that by continuously being a brick wall between the posts for the Reds.

Alisson - whose injury problems are becoming a cause for concern - has provided an ever-calming presence at Anfield and has solidified his position as their main man in between the sticks. The signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili will provide the type of competition the former Roma man hasn't been used to during his tenure on Merseyside when the Georgian arrives next summer. However, snatching the hotseat off of a man so dominant will be mightily impressive.
