New Surveillance Video Unveils Arsonist's Daring Attack on Pennsylvania Governor's Mansion
A chilling new surveillance video has emerged, revealing the brazen arsonist's attempt to set fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's mansion using flaming Molotov cocktails in April. The video, released by the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office, captures the moment when the suspect, Cody Balmer, broke into the mansion, causing extensive damage and endangering lives.
Balmer, who pleaded guilty to attempted murder, aggravated arson, burglary, and terrorism, was sentenced to a severe 25 to 50 years in prison. The attack occurred around 2 a.m. on April 13, just as Shapiro and his family were celebrating the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The family was asleep when the fire started.
The video footage shows Balmer, 38, breaking a window with a sledgehammer and then throwing a flaming Molotov cocktail inside, igniting a blaze. He then broke another window and climbed inside, attempting to break down a door that led to where Shapiro's family and guests slept. Despite his efforts, he was unable to enter that room.
Balmer's actions were not limited to one fire. While still inside, he threw a second Molotov cocktail into the dining area, causing a second fire. He then fled the mansion through an exit door, leaving the building ablaze.
The authorities revealed that Balmer admitted to harboring hatred towards Governor Shapiro and even threatened to attack him with a hammer if he found the governor in the mansion. The governor's mansion suffered extensive fire damage as a result of the attack.
Governor Shapiro addressed the incident at a press conference, emphasizing the need for real accountability for acts of political violence and urging the public not to become desensitized to such threats. He stated, 'Our family is not the only one to experience political violence, and it's crucial that we remain vigilant against rising political violence.'
